THE BELCHFORD DOWNHILL CHALLENGE 2012

Took place on Sunday September 16th 2012

**********************************************************

The Belchford Downhill Challenge was an absolutely brilliant soapbox cart race that brought  entrants and spectators from all over the country.  We thoroughly enjoyed putting it on for 11 years but it became so large that we could no longer run it.  With great sadness we called it a day in 2012. Please take a look at the reports and pictures (unfortunately some of the pictures were linked to other people’s storage sites so are not available)  to see how much fun we all had.

Thanks to everyone who has supported  the event over the 11 great years and made it into such a success.

***********************************************************

The 11th Belchford Downhill Challenge took place  on Furlongs Lane, Belchford.  Record entrants competed in front of record crowds.  A great days racing, with stalls and children’s attraction kept everyone amused, and the good weather kept everyone dry.

A wonderful group of volunteers came from far and wide to help make this the best Downhill Challenge the best yet.  The list is too long, and there is always the risk of forgetting someone, so thank you very much whether you came from Belchford, or from Yourkshire or somwhere in between.  Without your help, with preparation and on the day, there could be no downhill challenge.

A massive thanks to our brilliant sponsors, who give so much to making the event a success, both financially and in kind (loan of vans/cars etc.) and the drivers who put so much into making the recovery of carts the best yet, and to the local farmers and charities, who provided the land for car park.

This year, as last year, first aid was supplied by St John Ambulance who are brilliant, and help with managing carts at the top was given by the Air Cadets.

Thanks must also go to the villagers of Belchford, who happily put up with the inevitable upheaval each year.

We must not forget the marvellous band of teams (50 this year plus 12 bikes) who put so much enthusiasm into making Belchford one of the best downhill races in the country.  Without them, there would be no event.

A full report will follow soon, with video and photos.  In the meantime, the results are on the 2012 results page (link on left)

The Downhill Challenge is a soapbox cart race in the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Beauty. With a 50m drop over the 650m of the course, carts reach 45mph and with the chicanes, it is very exciting.

The event will be run to the same formula as this year’s one.

Two of last year’s sponsors Pipers Crisps and  Louth Tractors will be supporting us and will almost certainly be joined by some new ones who have shown interest in supporting the event.

A new website for the Downhill Challenge should be on line by then and we will link to that from  here, so please keep coming back here for information for the time being.
